Oscars- Best Pictures 2018

(Spoilers)*

Roma

Roma Poster

This movie was a black and white movie, all in Spanish, telling a story about a maid in the 1970s in Mexico. There is really no plot to this movie.. it's literally like a realty show just following this maid around and living her life. She's a maid for this.. well I assume Mexican family, but they look White, she has a boyfriend, she gets pregnant, the boyfriend leaves her, she goes looking for him, he threatens her because he doesn't want anything to do with that, turns out hes a bad guy in this battle/war/revolution/whatever is going on in Mexico City at the time, she loses the baby, and continues to care for this family she is a maid to.

Suuuper slow movie for me. Her name is Cleo and she barely ever talks. There are scenes that just a lasted way too long. The kids in the movie are just constantly fighting and loud and annoying and it just gave me anxiety.. too much going on with them. The saddest scene is when she loses her baby.. I cried a lot during that part.. but also super long scene. There's really not much else to say about this movie. I did not like it and wouldn't watch it again.

BlackKklansman

BlacKkKlansman Poster

This movie is a story from about the first black cop Ron to join the police department in Colorado Springs during the whole Black Panthers, KKK situation. He goes undercover to see if either organization is going to start a war/riot against the others or against the police. He ends up becoming a member of the KKK because he talks on the phone with leaders and gave them his real name, but another white cop ends up pretending to be him at the actual meetings and induction ceremony.

I would say I liked this movie. It was comedic even though it was about real and awful things going on in the world. There were a lot of parts that made me nervous. I was always afraid this two cops were going to get caught by the KKK leaders and then something bad was going to happen. There was this one white guy that was just evil and every scene he was in it just made me nervous. I liked Ron a lot. The way he acted and the way he talked I don't know I just liked it. I liked that he, his real name, was actually a part of the KKK and he even had a membership card with his name on it. It just reminded me of the Dave Chappelle skit. And at the end when they have to drop everything with the investigation, he calls the leader back and just jokes with him while the other cops listen and ends up revealing that he's black. It was an entertaining movie.

Ok let's see.. I watched this movie like forever ago, so I don't know how much of it I really remember. I am very surprised that a superhero movie is actually nominated for best picture. Actually, I'm kind of not surprised that this particular one was nominated but I won't say why... However, I loved this movie. I love all superhero movies. Most of the time I don't like when these kind of movies are in a made up world or outer space or whatever like just too unrealistic for me, but this one was fun. I really like the sister. She was funny and I enjoyed her scenes. I also like/don't like how evil Michael B Jordan is and all the bumps all over his body super gross me out. Anyways, I loved this movie and would recommend watching it.. but Best Picture? Nah.

A Star is Born

This movie was definitely too hyped for me. I saw this one before the nominations even came out for the Oscars. I wanted to see this one as soon as I saw the previews because it had Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, and then I saw a lot of friends on Facebook say that they loved it since we waited awhile to see it, so I was like alright this is going to be an awesome movie. It was ok. It's a sad story for sure, I didn't cry though. So basically the story is about this famous country/rock singer sees Lady Gaga performing at a drag club because he's a drunk and he just wants to get to the bar. He ends up thinking she is amazing and likes her so he gets her to meet him on tour and go backstage and stuff. They kind of start dating and he brings her out on stage and gets her hooked up with studios and stuff and she then becomes famous. But she becomes all poppy and hip instead of her songwriter self and he doesn't like it saying she's become a sell out or whatever. You know the same old story in other movies. Well she stays famous and he stays drunk and they fight and he goes to rehab and he stays sober and then her manager tells him some ugly stuff like she is never going to be the best she can be because she is always worried about you and all you do is hold her back and etc. So then she has a concert and she tells him to come but instead he takes a lot of drugs and kills himself.

Super sad movie, super overly hyped movie, I didn't feel any emotion which I normally do, I didn't like the way Bradley Cooper talked the whole time, I hate when they mumble and talk so low,  like I get it you're a drunk but you know what? this is also a movie and we need to hear what you're saying. I didn't hate the movie, I know it sounds that way but it wasn't awful. I was just expecting a lot more from it.

Bohemian Rhapsody

When I first saw the previews for this movie, I wanted to see it, but I also thought that it was going to be a stressful movie. Usually rock stars biography movies stress me out because of all the drugs and woman, or in this case men, and how they ruin their lives when they have things going so well for them.. it's just stressful. But luckily, this movie didn't go much into depth about that. It didn't completely ignore all of it, like it was for sure mentioned in the movie, and you know, almost everyone already knows about Queen and Freddie Mercury and his men and his drugs and his life, so they really didn't have to go into much depth about it. I actually loved how they did it.

So what I didn't know was that he was Pakistani? Is that what he was? Is that how you spell it? But I didn't know he was from over there. But from this movie I absolutely loved his personality. Very confident. It's just so crazy how things just fall into place for people. He was at a bar and this band had just broken up after playing their set and he goes to talk to them and ends up pairing up with them. What luck for those guys. He's just very confident about his abilities and doesn't care when people are mean to him about his teeth. And then after they become big, they make Bohemian Rhapsody and their producer guy wouldn't let that be their single on the album because it was six minutes, so they just up and fired him because he was just so confident it was a masterpiece. Loved that part. Also loved/hated the part when his manager suggests he becomes a solo artist and Freddie gets so mad that this guy would suggest he be disloyal to his band that he kicks him out of the limo on the street. Hated it because it wasn't really the managers idea, but loved it because of how loyal he was to his band.. although he did end up leaving them later. Also loved the part when he finally leaves John Reid who was just a bad influence on him, a moocher, just taking from him and using him, who didn't have his best interest in mind, and doesn't look at him and says, "I never want to see your face again" and walks away. I also love how he really loved his wife. Even though he was gay and attracted to men, he really loved her and wanted to be with her because of the way she made him feel.. the real friendship, loyalty and support.

I was really sad throughout the movie because he kind of reminded me of Michael Scott from the office in the sense that he just wanted to have real friends. He felt like his band didn't really want to be around him after they found out he was gay. I don't know how true that really is but the movie made it seem that way and it made me sad. And then when he found out he had HIV, ugh... just made me more sad. But the way he acted with confidence and without worrying and wanting to keep living his life and not making himself a sad story, just made me love him. LOVED this movie.

Hated it. Checked out halfway through the movie. I would have gotten on my phone and scrolled through all my apps multiple times if I weren't at the movie theaters. You had to know way too much about politics and history to enjoy this movie.

The Favourite

I reeeaalllyy don't like movies that are based on this time period and with Queens and royalty and all that stuff. But I saw that Emma Stone was in it so I thought ok, it won't be that dreadful. And it wasn't that bad. I did NOT like the lesbian stuff going on, but I'm just glad they didn't go into depth with all that. I think it more grossed me out because the Queen's legs were all boiled and stuff because she had gout and then the rubbing her legs and touching her down there just.... iicckk. Gives me the heebie jeebies.

So basically it's this story of Queen Anne and her two Lady's who are competing for her affection. Lady 1 has been with her for many years and the Lady 2 is trying to become a Lady again instead of a servant, and therefore they start to compete because Lady 1 makes it hard for her. It turns out though that they are actually cousins. Anyway, the movie goes about kind of in a funny way. I remember asking my husband if this is supposed to be funny.. There really isn't much else to the story. Lady 1 gets kicked out and Lady 2 takes her place, but the Queen loved Lady 1, and then realizes that Lady 2 just acted the way she did for her own benefit, so then Lady 2 realizes that the Queen knows who she is, and all three of them are just stuck in an awful situation that none of them wanted to be in. They all lost.

It kept me interested the whole time because I wanted to know who was going to win, but other than that it was ok.

OMG I looooved this movie!! So I had seen the previews to this movie and I was super interested. It looked like something I would really like. The story is like back in 1960s of this black guy who is a classical piano player and he decides he wants to do a tour with his trio down in the south. So he has to hire this driver who will drive him around to all of his concerts and hotels, but he chooses this Italian guy because he's heard good things about him, not only that he's a driver but that he can in some ways protect him. The Italian guy however is kind of like not really liking black people at the time, not really hating them either but you know, still kind of iffy about it.. so he turns down the job. Well, the musician then calls his house to ask again and then to also ask his wife and the Italian guy ends up taking the job. Oh man. The whole time they are driving they are like getting to know each other and stuff and the musician helps the driver write to his wife because he is kind of illiterate, and the driver totally protects the musician in multiple encounters and has his back for everything! Just super loyal to this man, even when he was like heck no I'm not working for a black man in the beginning. Ugh, I just loved this movie. The driver just always talking crudely and not having a care about anything and always eating good food and helping out this guy. It was so good. Each time I kept thinking this driver is going to let this guy down, he's just going to forget to get him to a concert or take the job his friends were offering him, but he never let me down.

I for sure wanted Bohemian Rhapsody to win because that was for sure my favorite movie out of all of them, but then this was the last movie we saw and I was like, nope this is it! This is my favorite movie this year. But no way did I think it was going to win. It wasn't artsy or dark enough to win, so I was very surprised and very excited that it did!
