The Last Black Unicorn

Image result for the last black unicorn

Omg. Let my just say I have never read an entire book in one day until this one. I love this book. I love reading autobiographies by celebrities I like, or by celebrities that have a lot of gossip being said about them because you know, I just love the chisme. My brother in law buys me these for Christmas almost every year. I've read Tina Fey's, Amy Poehler's, Mindy Kaling's and now Tiffany Haddish's.

Tiffany is just so funny. Her book is basically just all stories about her childhood and her mom and her ex boyfriends and her ex husband. Some of the stories I just couldn't believe they were just so crazy. One story actually made me gasp out loud, but I guess I do that often because my brother makes fun of me when I do it during movies. I was laughing the whole way through the book and telling my brother some stories from it. She is just so nasty it makes me laugh. I love how much she just doesn't care what other celebrities think about her and how ghetto she still is. She tells about how guy comedians always wanted her to sleep with them in order for her to open up for their shows and get exposure, but she never did that because she was wanting to make it on her own. And then after the movie Girl's Trip, they all started blowing up her phone and wanted her on their tours and stuff and she's like.. nah. Ugh, I love that. I don't know how true all of it is like if she really didn't sleep around with some of them, but to be able to make it and then turn them down... that's the best. Oh, but going back to how ghetto she is.. when people would like tell rumors or give her a hard time and treat her like she wasn't important.. she would always threaten them like she had people that would kill for her.. hilarious. I really enjoyed the stories of her childhood. She couldn't read until she was in high school, and she always got away with not being able to read because she could just talk her way out of everything, and I believe that for sure. It was a real fun book and I would totally recommend everyone to read it.. 18 & up.. she does a lot of cussing and like I said.. she nasty.

Bossypants- Tina Fey

I never really liked SNL, and I still don't. For some reason I just don't find it funny, except for the occasional SNL shorts, and the clips with Justin Timberlake in them. I actually don't really remember when I first saw Tina Fey, maybe it was when she did the Sarah Palin imitation. But anyway, when I first saw her, I loved her immediately. Was I disappointed in Baby Mama? Yeah, I was. I expected it to be a whole lot funnier. I started watching 30 Rock with my husband, and I loved her in that too, but Tracey Morgan was just too annoying for me so I stopped watching. But Date Night with Steve Carrell... That is my favorite movie of all time. I love it. So last Christmas, my brother-in-law got me Bossypants as a gift, and I was totally excited to start reading it. I didn't really know what to expect from the book either. I never really heard about it before and wasn't too sure if it was an autobiography or what. It is.

I enjoyed the book a lot. I will admit that there were a lot of references that I didn't understand, but it was a good read. I like the way she writes, it's like she's just talking to you, explaining how her life was, and she had a lot of funny and embarrassing stories. The one thing I didn't like is that she kind of went out of order of her life, like back and forth, which was a little confusing. But I'd definitely recommend it.

Book Movies

The Lucky One- Nicholas Sparks

I like to read books that are turned into movies. I might have mentioned that before. I never really wanted to read Nicholas Sparks books because I always felt kind of funny like I'm some mushy, lovey girl. But I was fresh out of ideas, so I decided to pick one up. I was greatly surprised. They are mushy, lovey books, but they are a fun and easy read. The Lucky One was really good. It was about a man who finds this girls picture in the war, and his friend believes that this picture is what kept him from dying the whole three years he was in the war, and he decides to travel across the states to find her. There was obviously a lot of other stuff that went on in the book, even a douche bag character that annoyed the crap out of me, and I really enjoyed it. I like how Sparks writes. At some chapters, he leaves you with cliff hangers and I like that because it's not every chapter, but enough to keep you wanting to read more.

Now the movie on the other hand. Of course the books are always better than the movies, but this movie was very disappointing. Like with Harry Potter, the movies are still exciting even though they don't match the books that well, but this one, the story was lacking A LOT of the details in the book. Like the douche bag character in the book was barely even a douche bag in the movie, and that sucked because even though I hated his character, I liked it because I hated him so much. I'd definitely recommend the book though.

Safe Haven- Nicholas Sparks

Now this book was amazing. It's about a girl who ran away from her abusive husband, but was always scared that he was going to find her. What an awful life to live. While I was reading this book, on the chapters that especially made me mad because the husband was an a-hole, I would slam the book closed, give an evil look to my husband and say, "If you EVER hit me, I would cut off your weener and throw it down the garbage disposal!" and then walk out of the room. But the book was just really good. It made me feel a lot of different emotions, and I was so tensed up during the end of the book because I was afraid of what was going to happen. Sparks really made me feel anxious and I loved it.

The movie was quite the opposite. This movie was just so different from the book that it made me angry. The parts that I loved the most in the book, the parts that made me feel  the most emotion weren't even in the movie, and the story was changed too much. The movie also started off super slow and I was getting bored with it. I'm surprised my brother and his friend didn't walk out of the room to watch something else.

Wicked Appetite- Janet Evanovich

Yup, you guessed it. Another Evanovich book. I think this is the last one I'll read for awhile since I don't think there are anymore of hers left to read. This one is kind of like the "between-the-numbers" books, except this one doesn't have Stephanie Plum. Diesel is the main character, and it's all about the "Unmentionable" abilities they have. I think I like this one better than the "between-the-numbers" ones because Evanovich doesn't use Stephanie Plum. When she did that it just took away from the main story of the number books, and I felt that it was just a hassle to read those books instead of skipping over them. I guess I could have skipped over them, but I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. Anyway, "Wicked Appetite" was a lot more fun to read because it was a whole new story line of itself. The next one of this series should be coming out this month, I think. So, maybe I will read another book of hers pretty soon then.

Update!

Books:

"Plum Spooky," "Plum Lovin'," "Visions of Sugar Plums," and "Plum Lucky"

These books are also written by Janet Evanovich and they were written 'between the numbers.' I didn't like these books as much as the number books (which I also finished btw). They were too unrealistic for me. There's this new guy Diesel who has some weird sort of abilities which don't make much sense, and it's just a side plot from the main story. Evanovich uses Stephanie Plum as the main character, but Ranger and Joe Morelli aren't the main guys in them, which is pretty much the reason they suck.

"Metro Girl" and "Motor Mouth"

This is a different series written by Evanovich (in case you haven't figured it out, I pretty much enjoy her as an author). These are completely different from the Plum novels, as in characters and the story line, but they have a similar feel to them. The main character Barnaby is a girl who needs to solve a problem, whether it be finding her brother or trying to get out some kind of trouble, and she has a partner Hooker who is the "Joe Morelli" of this series. Just like in the Plum novels, there's that sexual tension Evanovich loves to write about between the two of them. The books are a fun and easy read.

Movies:
Avengers (PG-13)

This movie was amazing. I wanted to see it again right after we finished watching it. I love humor in all movies, and this one had a lot of it. The action was good. The story line was good. The actors were good. I didn't get confused during it. It was a great movie.

21 Jump Street (R)

Omg! I loved this movie so much. It was hilarious. It's the best to see a comedy with someone who will laugh at stuff, and I saw this one with my little brother. He had already seen it before, so he knew what was coming, and he still laughed at everything. It just makes the experience so much better. Actually, it was a funny story. We got to the dollar theater, which was about 25 minutes away, and both of us forgot our IDs. The stupid girl at the counter wouldn't let my brother in because he looked too young, but she believed that I was 23. So we walked away and I told my brother to look for a back door and that I was going to buy a ticket and let him in when I got back there. But then it hit me that that was a stupid idea... I could just buy tickets for another movie, and then go into the theater playing 21 Jump Street. So we got tickets for John Carter (which I would NEVER watch) and we snuck in. Second story- who the heck brings a baby and two young kids to a rated R movie?! Seriosuly, a BABY! They sat right in front of us and the darn baby kept crying and making noises at the funny parts! After making my annoyed noises and clearing my throat, I finally just decided to move to another seat. Anyway, back to the movie. It was super funny. Channing Tatum was actually more funny than Jonah Hill, I think. I've already seen it again.

Crazy, Stupid, Love (PG-13)

I think this is one of my favorite movies. I pretty much like all movies with Steve Carrell in them (except for 40 Year-Old Virgin (below)).  I loved Ryan Gosling's character because he was such a loyal friend. The only reason that this movie didn't receive a 10 from me is because of the stupid 8th grade graduation scene. It was so awkward that it was just uncomfortable to watch. Other than that, it's a fun movie.

40 Year-Old Virgin (R)

From my experience, I would say most of the time when a comedy is rated R it's more disgusting than funny. And this movie was disgusting. Obviously it was all about sex, but it was just in a gross way. And I also didn't like seeing Steve Carrell in that kind of character. Even though he was the nerd, it was still all about him trying to have sex, and it was just weird for me after seeing him is so many other movies and shows where he isn't talking about doing the nasty. I'm pretty sure I laughed at some parts, but none of them were memorable.

Borat (R)

Also a very disgusting comedy, although this one I think had more humor in it, but the disgusting parts were the worst of any I have ever seen. I like that it was actually real footage; that these people weren't actors and they were just that stupid. It made me laugh, but I would never watch it again, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Tower Heist (PG-13)

Ben Stiller is one of the worst actors ever. I don't like any of his movies usually because I hate his characters. He was dumb in Anchorman, too annoying in Along Came Polly, The Fockers movies are just too frustrating to watch, I hated him in Dodgeball, but in this movie, I could actually stand watching him. I liked his character, and I liked the plot of the movie. The only part I didn't like was with the car. Once again, it was just too unrealistic for me. And I know, movies are all unrealistic and that's what makes them movies, but I just don't like when it's like that. I like to pretend that these stories are real; it makes movie watching more enjoyable. This movie started out fun, but it lost its appeal.

Stephanie Plum Novels- Janet Evanovich

After I finished The Hunger Games, I couldn't find any other books to read. As you know now, I love books that turn into movies, so I tried reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That didn't work out so well. Too many big words. And I didn't understand what was going on in the beginning, so I decided to return it. Then I took a trip to Walmart during my lunch break and decided to look for other books to read there. I found The Vow and One for the Money- both movies. I tried checking out both of them at the library, but they weren't there. I decided I would just read one of them everyday while I was at lunch at Walmart so I wouldn't have to pay for the book. I didn't want to read The Vow in public though because that would have been embarrassing, so I started One for the Money. I got all the way to chapter 9 and then the people at Walmart took the book away! Now I had to find a way to get the book back because I was in the middle of it. I tried a different library by my work and it turns out the One for the Money is the first book of an 18+ book series! I was super excited because now I would have more books to read while my husband was home playing video games. AND, I love these books!

One for the Money
Bad Guy: Benito Ramirez
Two for the Dough
Bad Guy: Kenny Manusco and Spiro
Three to get Deadly
Searching for: Moses Beidemer
Four to Score
Searching for: Maxine
Bad Guy:Sugar
High Five
Searching for: Uncle Fred
Hot Six
Searching for: Ranger
Seven Up
Bad Guy: DeChooch
Hard Eight
Bad Guy: Abruzzi

These are the ones I have read so far. They are so good. Basically Stephanie Plum becomes a bounty hunter in the first one, and each book is a different case she's on. It's pretty much just the story of her life chasing after these people, but she also has this sexual tension between her and these other two guys: Joe Morelli and Ranger. Morelli is someone she's known since high school who has a bad reputation with women and is a cop, but they become involved with each other, and Ranger is a fellow bounty hunter who kind of trains and helps out Stephanie throughout the books, but kind of intimidates Stephanie with his mysteriousness. These books literally make me laugh out loud sometimes. I love the way Evanovich writes. I would totally recommend these books to all girls who can take a few cuss words and who don't flip out at a few sexual situations.

Catching Fire & Mockingjay- Suzanne Collins

I just finished these books today. I borrowed them from a lady at church saying that I would return them within two weeks, and I was right. These books just get me hooked and I can't stop reading. The whole Hunger Games series is just awesome in general. I would say the first book is my favorite. Catching Fire was actually really good too. I was told it was the worst of the three, but I don't agree. I think the books get worse as they go. Well, I wouldn't say "worse" exactly because they are all really good, the books just aren't as good as the previous one. Catching Fire makes me hate the Capitol so much more, and I feel sorry for Katniss because of what she is forced to do. Mockingjay started off really slow for me. I previously said I don't like war-ish type stuff, like with politics and military and such. Well, Mockingjay started out like that so it was hard for me to keep interest. I also don't like how the book ended. I felt that Collins sped up the ending; she tried to fit so much into the last three pages, and that kind of irritated me. She only wrote it to make a conclusion, and I know it's not a love story, but she could have elaborated so much more. Oh well. I still loved them.

The Hunger Games- Suzanne Collins

When I first heard about this book at the beginning of this year I thought, no way would I ever read that. It's just some kind of stupid, political-type, futuristic book that I would never have an interest in. Even after I started hearing all this hoop-la about it as the year went on, I still didn't have any desire to start reading it. When I finally finished the Harry Potter series and the Twilight series, it was either The Help or The Hunger Games next. Since the library was out of both books, I decided to take my hour-long lunch breaks at Walmart so I could just read the books there for free while I ate instead of buying them. I know, ghetto. I started with the first few pages of The Hunger Games and it didn't catch my attention, so I went for The Help instead. Finally, I went out with one of the ladies from my ward, and we had the same interest in books, and she's the one that convinced me to read The Hunger Games, so I did, and.....

HOLY COW! I loved it! There's that saying "don't judge a book by its cover," well, I guess I can say don't judge a book by the first few pages either. You really got to get further into the book to start liking it. I finished the book in less than a week because it was so good, and it was pretty short. It's one of those books where at the end of every chapter it leaves you hanging, and you keep reading so you're not left at a cliffhanger, and then you're like, "DANG IT! It's frikin 11:30 at night!" (My bed time is 10, so that's late for me.) My husband even told me to put the book down because he was in the middle of a conversation with me; I guess I didn't know.

I don't really want to give a review about the book because it's still pretty new and many who might read my blog haven't even read it yet. So, what I will say is that I was right about it being a political-type, futuristic book, but that's still a reach. It has government, and it takes place in the time after North America is apparently blown to pieces or something, but it's mostly about the crazy things these children have to go through because the government has such control over the districts. I guess this will make more sense if you read it, which I obviously recommend. It's a pretty dark book, so dark I think if the movie really did the book justice it would definitely HAVE to be rated R.

Books Up-To-Date

Since I haven't had the desire to read any books until after I graduated from BYU, (sparknotes was all I read throughout grade school) I will update about all the books I have read in the past 3 months, which also means all the books I've read in my entire life. My new love of reading is quite easy to explain....I got married. Not saying I don't like spending time with my husband, because as he and I both know I hate being without him, but he has other interests than I do. He likes video games, sports (I just like NBA basketball), and he also studies for law school, so I had to find a new pasttime. So without further ado...
My Most Recent Books:

Harry Potter- J.K. Rowling
I will most likely read these again later on in life, and when I do, I will give a more detailed description of each, but for now I will just say that I love this entire series. I will admit, these are the only books I ever read growing up, but to be honest, I remembered nothing. By the time the next book came out I had already forgotten what happened in the book previous, and I had no desire to refresh my memory. But now that I was able to read these books back-to-back, and also have the movies to watch afterwards, they have been much more entertaining. I am looking forward to reading these to my kids.

Twilight Saga- Stephanie Meyer

Reading these books after finishing the Harry Potter series was not the best idea. Or maybe reading them as a 23 year-old instead of a teenager was the problem. Either way, these books were kind of annoying. I'm not going to lie, they kept me interested, and I can't wait to see the rest of the movies, but it's not something I would read again. Bella's obsession with Edward and how Meyer continuously describes the mesmerizing features of Edward is too repetitive and cheesy. No wonder the movies make me feel awkward. I would recommend these only because they've become well-known in the world, or if you're a 15 year-old girl.

The Help- Kathryn Stockett

As you can see, if a book is going to be turned into a movie, I will most likely want to read it. The Help was a pretty interesting read. At times, I felt like it was getting a little boring, but as soon as that thought crossed my mind, something exciting would happen. Not only did this book make me literally laugh out loud, it really pissed me off too. Some of these characters I just wanted to punch in the face. Still a movie I have yet to see, but I am looking forward to it. I would definitely recommend this book.

Room for Love- Andrea Meyer

I came across this book in the library as I was trying to find "The Host" by Stephanie Meyer. Since they didn't have that book, and I didn't want to make my husband wait even longer for me, I just took this book off the shelf and checked it out. Not a good idea. It was all about this girl slutting it up in New York, trying to find her perfect guy by being a shallow whore. To say the least, I did not like this book and I would not recommend it for anyone, especially shallow whores, because she ends up happily-ever-after and we all know there's a low chance of finding a great-looking guy who treats you well. (I have the only one.)
